Firecracker Quilt 4 QoV

Last month I did a brief presentation at our local Veterans' Club meeting telling them about Quilts of Valor. I brought some siggy blocks prepared by the girls at the local QoV chapter. Each of the attendees signed a block and entered their thanks adding their branch of service some cases.

When I got home, I told the QoV leader of my success in getting so many signatures and told her I would finish off the blocks then assemble the quilt. Now here's a case of "me and my big mouth". Four HSTs were added to each one making a nine inch block. Oh those bias edges.

First I cut the HST too small and in my "cheap" mind thought it would work and didn't. This caused lots and lots of un-sewing and re-cutting. Of course then the corners didn't meet up and they were bulky too.

There is good news. The flimsy is done and after a good pressing it will head to one of the long arm volunteers who, perhaps, can cover my errors with her skills. The comments some of the writers share on their block is touching. There was even a WWII veteran who signed a block.

I guess the lesson is, stick to your stronger skills. Well, they are  rather worn out. However, I do enjoy machine applique on the center eagle blocks from one of Marianne Fon's QoV patterns in the Love of Quilting magazine. Not keeping count, but I would guess I'm at over 40 eagles so far.

Moral of the story? Rise where you shine.

  1. Wow! This really turned out beautifully. The eagle quilt is fantastic too. I have a weakness for patriotic and Americana quilts. -Derrith
