Different Hexagon Coasters

While wandering around the past week at Sewwequilt's Hexie Queen blog hop, inspiration struck like lightening.  Remember the other hexie coasters from my previous post here?  Well, using the same principle here's what was created.  You can see I was so anxious to take pictures, the threads still remain.  Only a skilled quilting eye can tell the secret.  This was fun!

Hexagons

No, I'm not a hexie queen but I've been following this blog hop and am so impressed with the creations.  The fabric artists have come up with too many really fun projects.  It's amazing to see hexies are more than just grandmother's flower garden blocks--so much more.  The hexies are used in many projects other than quilts.  But don't get me wrong, there are plenty of gorgeous quilts too.

Coasters

Tutorial:  How to make hexagon coasters
(without any hand stitching)

Materials To Make Four Hexagon Coasters 

1 6 inch strip – width of fabric

1 6 inch strip of batting 22 inches long

Fabric for center—smaller hexagon
Fusible web (I use Heat N Bond lite)

Hexagon templates

1 5-inch (measured point to point diagonally)

1 4-inch (measured point to point diagonally)

Let's get started

Fold fabric in half the long way right sides together.  Trace four 5-inch hexagon using template.

Carefully cut an X in the center of the top piece of fabric—not in both pieces of fabric—just the top fabric.

Pin the fabric to the batting.

Sew on the inside of the marked line back stitching at start and end of each hexagon.

Cut out each sewn hexagon about 1/8^th inch away from stitching and clip corners.

Turn inside out through the X and press.

Now for the center:  Trace four 4-inch hexagons onto fusible web.

 

Cut a window as shown.  This makes the fabric less stiff and perhaps more absorbent.  It also gives you a better view of the (back side) of the patterned fabric for placement.

Press the fusible to the backside of the fabric selected for the top center.

 

Cut out on the marked lines.

Remove backing paper from the fusible, center on the base and fuse in place on the coaster center where the cut X is located.  It covers the cut X.

Stitch center edge by hand or machine with your choice of stitch.  You can use a plain stitch, zig zag or a fancy stitch.

This one is just a blanket stitch.

This one is feather stitched.

Ho Ho Ho Blog Hop

This hop has me jazzed and I hope you are finding lots of inspiration from the talented ladies here.  Thanks to Madame Samm and Carol for this extremely fun event.  It is great to see everyone’s creations.  The inspiration should keep us busy from now until the holidays.

Everything I made came from my bountiful yet dated fabric stash.

Have you ever had a cup of Christmas tea?  The book by Tom Hegg will top off your holiday season.  It’s always great to have friends in for the holiday if for no other reason than just tea.  It was great to hear the book on tape and sit with friends.  The story will make you slow down and appreciate life.

This narrow quilt of stacked of Christmas gifts will hang nicely in my hallway.  Easy piecing and some metallic gold thread used for quilting the center block around the poinsettias.

A bit of fused appliqué and blanket stitch has created a small wall hanging that’ll make a nice gift.  Blue is just not me,

Here’s my repurpose idea for the holiday.  These tall pasta jars are perfect for dipped pretzel sticks.  A quilted bib for the jar held tight with velcro.  The holly is a tiny bit of the Petal Play technique and beads for the berries.  Sometimes these jars are available at the dollar stores.

Embroidery on the edge of this half circle napkin using a backstitch sings the old song about going to grandmother’s house.  At least one is completed and the other just needs assembly.  There are two more cut just waiting for their stitching and completion.

My friend was over the other day and I got her started on these quick and easy coasters.  Yep, she’s hooked too.   Absolutely no hand stitching.
